He joined Morrisons in 2013 as finance director

Morrisons group strategy director James Badger is leaving the business after 13 years.

Badger, who is understood to be exiting Morrisons by the end of the month, was responsible for overseeing elements of the business including transformation, technology, sustainability, agriculture, property and procurement.

He joined Morrisons in 2013 as finance director, before working his way up and taking on several other senior roles.

Badger became wholesale director in 2016, online and wholesale director in 2020, followed by group commercial and manufacturing director in 2022.

Under the latter role, he was responsible for the trading, supply chain and online teams, as well as the convenience, wholesale and manufacturing business.

Prior to Morrisons, he worked at Tesco for over eight years, spanning a range of finance positions.

“James Badger has decided now is the right time for him to leave the business,” a Morrisons spokeswoman told The Grocer. “We want to thank James for all his contributions over the last 13 years and we wish him and his family all the very best for the future.”

His exit comes as Morrisons undergoes a consultation period regarding more than 200 roles at its Hilmore House head office after the supermarket revealed plans to step up its use of AI as part of a cost-cutting drive.

Roles in commercial, technical, own brand, marketing, HR and supply chain are understood to be included in the latest proposals.

When Morrisons notified colleagues of the restructure, a spokesperson said: “During 2025, Morrisons commenced a long-term programme to re-engineer certain business functions, to concentrate on the core activities that our customers value, streamline processes and structures, automate a number of manual tasks and capitalise on the potential of data and AI to improve performance.

“As we evolve and adapt, we are proposing to make some changes to a number of areas within our central structure. This will involve making some tough but necessary decisions which will impact on colleagues in our head office, where we are proposing to place a number of roles at risk of redundancy,” they added.

The consultation period is understood to end on Friday 5 June.
