A futuristic new reverse vending machine has been unveiled as the UK prepares for the launch of the deposit return scheme.
The Tomra R2 was showcased for the first time this week at the RWM Expo at the NEC, Birmingham.
The machine allows users to pour in whole bag of containers at once and features a wall-mounted front unit, which Tomra said minimised valuable store space.
The machine, which launched elsewhere in Europe last year, has no batch limit, meaning customers can conveniently dispose of all their plastic bottles and cans in one go and carry on with their shopping.
Previously Tomra has rolled out machines in Ireland able to take up to 100 containers.
The move comes as the UK government and the industry DMO continue to make preparations for the launch of DRS in October 2027.
Tomra is one of the leading reverse vending machine companies, also operating in countries including Germany, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark and the US.
“As we begin the countdown to a deposit return scheme going live in the UK, we’re keen to ensure retailers feel ready and can explore the opportunities it offers,” said Truls Haug, vice president, new markets EMEA for Tomra Collection.
“We want to reassure them that there is a reverse vending solution for all types of retailers and the Tomra R2 is a great example of this.
“It offers a solution for various types of retailers, with a wall-mount format and compact backroom set-up. It’s a fantastic option for stores that want to offer their customers a quick and convenient returns experience.”
