Tesco has doubled the time home delivery and click & collect slots can be booked in advance, from four to eight weeks.
The supermarket has also moved to remove the charge for same-day delivery and click & collect from selected stores. The surcharge had cost customers £1 when using click & collect and £2 for home delivery.
The move was “for summer only” Tesco told The Grocer, and aimed at “those unexpected summer moments”.
“Summer holidays are a busy time for all of us as we juggle family life. From days out to BBQs and picnics, we’re helping customers across the UK make the most of the summer, delivering everything they need to enjoy at home or during their holiday stay,” said Rob Graham, Tesco online director.
The supermarket said the changes have been made to serve customers “getting the essentials delivered to your staycation accommodation, preparing for a BBQ with family and friends or making sure that you have everything you need when you get home from holiday”.
Tesco is also offering more than 15,000 additional click & collect slots from stores near popular holiday destinations across the UK so customers can “pick up the essentials on route to your holiday home or campsite”.
Customers are now able to add a new address for their home delivery, or select a different store for their click & collect order, when they place their order.
“This is a great time to plan ahead and let Tesco take some of the stress away from those summer activities,” Graham said. The additional slots in “holiday hotspots” were “to make sure we’re there when customers need us” he added.
In the supermarket’s preliminary results in April, Tesco said its UK online sales were up 10.2%, driven by growth in orders per week, with market share up 173 basis points year on year to 35.5%. Online customer satisfaction was also up by eight points year on year, and 150 new delivery vans had hit the road.
