Tesco said its deal was 25p a person cheaper than the price of the equivalent deal for Clubcard members in 2024

Tesco has brought out the big guns in the value Christmas dinner wars, with a Clubcard deal that comes in cheaper than Aldi and Lidl’s offers.

From today (19 December), Tesco is selling a Christmas feast for six for under £10.

It consists of a 3kg whole turkey for £7.50 (£2.50 per kg, or £5 per kg without a Clubcard), 15 own-label Yorkshire puddings (230g, 40p or 46p without a Clubcard), chicken gravy granules (200g, 65p or 73p without a Clubcard), sage & onion stuffing mix (170g, 40p or 45p without a Clubcard), and four types of veg – carrots (1kg), potatoes (2kg), sprouts (500g), and parsnips (500g) – all reduced on Clubcard to 15p each.

It comes in at a total of £9.55, or £1.59 a person.

Aldi and Lidl are both offering a deal to serve eight for £11.63. Because their deals are claimed to serve two more people than Tesco’s, the claimed cost per head is less, at £1.45 per person.

However, Lidl and Aldi’s meals come with only 50g more turkey than Tesco’s (a 3.05kg bird versus 3kg). Aldi and Lidl’s deals also contain more gravy granules (300g vs 200g) and two packs of stuffing mix. Elsewhere, the deals contain the same types of veg in the same quantities.

Tesco has reached its price point without going as low on veg as Aldi and Lidl, both of whom have dropped to a new low of 5p per item.

Instead, Tesco has undercut them on the turkey, with its £2.50 per kg Clubcard price below the £2.95 per kg set by the discounters.

Both Aldi and Lidl’s deals consist of a 3.05kg whole fresh turkey for £9 (£2.95 per kg), own-label Yorkshire puddings (15-pack, 46p) stuffing mix (90p, two packs), gravy granules (99p, 300g), and four varieties of veg – potatoes (2kg), sprouts (500g), carrots (1kg) and parsnips (500g) – for 5p each. Neither of the discounters’ offers require membership of a loyalty scheme, with both instead open to all customers.

Tesco said its deal was 25p a person cheaper than the price of the equivalent deal for Clubcard members in 2024, and 50p a person cheaper than its equivalent deal in 2023.

The deal is available in “the majority of large Tesco stores” according to the supermarket.

“Christmas is a time when value really matters, and we’re committed to helping Tesco customers make the most of the festive season,” said Tesco UK CEO Ashwin Prasad.

“With the traditional Christmas dinner at the heart of so many celebrations, being able to feed six people for under £10 with a Clubcard is something we know will make a real difference to families across the UK.

“We love rewarding our customers with great prices and have thousands of other great Clubcard deals in store this week. This is alongside hundreds of items price matched to Aldi and our low everyday prices on everyday essentials to ensure our customers get what they need to celebrate the festive season and beyond.”
