Mimica’s Bump tag can help producers extend expiry dates by four days for beef steak, it claimed

Food waste-saving startup Mimica has raised around £300k as it ramps up production of its ‘bumpy’ labels.

Mimica’s Bump tags and caps, originally smooth to the touch, turn bumpy as food and drinks go off. Because the labels are sensitive to temperature, they are able to more accurately inform consumers of when the product has actually spoiled.

Each label is calibrated to the specific food within the packaging – meaning food producers can safely extend expiry dates and drastically cut food waste

Mimica has raised over £113k on crowdfunding site Crowdcube, alongside £179k in a wider funding round, to fully automate production after bringing it in-house in January 2025. The raise values Mimica at £15m pre-raise.

Founder and chief design officer Solveiga Pakštaitė said the investment would allow Mimica to start fulfilling larger contracts in 2026 from its Wrexham site.

“Currently, the line we have is semi-automated, meaning we’ve only been able to produce smaller volumes,” said Pakštaitė in an update to investors posted to Crowdcube.

“This isn’t enough to service our 300-plus customer waiting list, including larger potential customers such as Sainsbury’s, who we are about to launch a trial with.”

Beating the £250k it had aimed for, Mimica has kept its fundraising round open to “grow its team and complete development of its new Bump label solution”.

Mimica has claimed Bump caps can extend the shelf life of fruit juices up to five days, and minced beef by five days – even extending beef burgers’ shelf life by 10 days, as overly cautious use by dates are replaced with more accurate shelf life dates used alongside the bumpy labels.

It said it had managed to extend the shelf life of products from meat processor ABP by 21%, reducing strain on the company’s supply chain and delivering on shelf life targets requested by its retail customers.
