Vivera has expanded its range with the launch of a new plant-based salmon fillet alternative into 300 Tesco stores across the UK this week.

The chilled fillets are made of wheat protein and are fortified with omega-3 fatty acids to improve the nutritional value of the product.

A pack of two will retail at around £3, which the JBS-owned brand claimed made it cheaper than the cost of real salmon.

“Creating a vegan salmon fillet is a real challenge because the texture is very different to anything that has been developed before,” said Simon Colthorpe, country manager at Vivera.

“We have invested a lot of time and effort and believe that we have really managed to get close to the mouthfeel of salmon.”

According to the brand, the fillet has a “fatty bite and flakey structure which falls apart like normal salmon does”.

Vivera said it wanted to change consumer habits to move away from eating fish due to the environmental damage fishing can cause.
