asda rec point

Asda bagged a sixth consecutive Grocer 33 win as we welcomed M&S via Ocado as a guest retailer for the first time.

In order to make our list M&S-specific, we filled it with fresh and own-brand items. At £57.97 Asda came in £1.84 cheaper than runner-up Tesco.

Asda offered the lowest price for 13 items and was exclusively cheapest for seven, including the avocados, blackcurrant squash, mini flapjack bites and Parma ham.

Tesco offered the lowest price for 12 lines and was exclusively cheapest for six, including the cheese puffs, semi-skimmed milk and mixed peppers.

In recent weeks Tesco has significantly bridged the price gap with Asda through its Clubcard prices initiative. However the bulk of these deals are usually on branded lines, so the scheme had little impact this week.

Tesco loyalty cardholders would only have received a further 20p discount as a result of a deal on the tomato & mascarpone pasta sauce, leaving Tesco £1.64 more expensive.

In terms of promotions, Asda had eight deals, Morrisons six, Waitrose five, Tesco three, M&S/Ocado two and Sainsbury’s had no offers on our list.

Morrisons came in £1.98 more expensive than Asda at £59.95. It had the lowest price for nine lines and, like Tesco, was exclusively cheapest for six. These included the diet lemonade and chicken thighs.

There was less than £3 separating the big four as Sainsbury’s came in at £60.95. But there was a much bigger gap to the other two retailers.

M&S/Ocado beat Waitrose for fifth place. It was exclusively cheapest for strawberries this week and its £74.90 basket was 2.3% cheaper year on year but it was £16.93 more expensive than Asda.

Waitrose was cheapest for the gammon but £18.21 more expensive than Asda at £76.18.
