Why do you think you won? Service is the magic ingredient and we have a store full of motivated people who take it seriously. We’ve had extensive training for more than 400 individuals over the past six months and worked really hard at it.

You have an Aldi and Asda nearby. How do you compete? With Price Promise, the customers now believe we match them. The feedback I’ve been getting is really positive. We’ve also done a lot of work to make our pricing simpler for customers to understand in store. They are beginning to trust us again on price.

What’s selling well at the moment? Fresh produce and meat produce are absolutely romping ahead for us. As well as an improvement in service there has been a noticeable improvement in the quality of food and its getting the right results.

What about non-food? We’ve had a refit of our technology section, with items such as iPads and Kindles being displayed much more prominently, and it, too, is romping ahead

Aren’t people buying these online instead? At the end of the day, people are not going to spend £400 on a product without wanting to look at it and feel it first.

How have preparations for Easter gone? With our different opening hours to England, meaning Sunday does not have restricted hours, Easter doesn’t have quite the same impact on stores. We’ll be working 24/7 over the Easter weekend but it’s a very good end of month for us.

What’s the biggest difference between stores in Scotland and England? The restriction on booze. With the wines and spirits all in one part of the store, it makes it a totally different mechanic. The Scottish government has set out strong policies on health and we’ve adapted.

How have you coped with the big freeze? There’s a saying in Scotland that there’s no such thing as bad weather - just bad clothes. That said, we do have measures in place, such as quad bikes to grit the car park.
