Danone has stepped in to help the dairy industry build global supply chain resilience with the launch of the Danone Milk Academy.

In an industry first, the French multinational said the programme is designed to strengthen the resilience and long-term viability of dairy farming worldwide.

Danone said it builds on the “strong foundations” of its existing farmer upskilling initiatives, and will work with farms of all sizes to provide the tools needed to ensure their businesses remain resilient and thrive.

“What it takes to thrive as a farmer these days is changing,” said the company’s chief operations officer Vikram Agarwal. “At Danone, we’re committed to giving our farmer community unparalleled access to the knowledge, expertise and tools that will make their businesses more agile and resilient and ultimately strengthen the dairy supply chain.”

He added that the business was working with farming partners, academic institutions and technical experts to improve knowledge and capabilities. 

“Through the Milk Academy, we’re accelerating the transformation of dairy farming together – making it future-fit, resilient, and ready to meet the needs of customers and consumers,” he said.

It comprises three global Centres of Excellence tailored to different farming models and sizes, and acts as a “catalyst” for local training organised by each country.

The programme combines face-to-face learning sessions in key dairy regions alongside a digital knowledge platform to deliver additional training and connect farmers globally.

Participants will receive accredited training from Wageningen University & Research and Cornell University.

“Working with farmers to help them enhance their management skills to improve cow health and wellbeing, management of people and their businesses, and stewardship of the environment is our passion, and we are delighted that Danone has chosen to partner with us,” said Tom Overton, department chair of animal science and director of the Pro-Dairy programme at Cornell University.

The curriculum will cover aspects of farm management and sustainability including herd productivity and longevity, the efficient handling of manure, soil health and regenerative agriculture for feed and crops, in addition to other subjects.

“It’s about ensuring our knowledge reaches those who need it most, in various continents,” said Geurt Heimensen, manager of Wageningen Academy. “As an independent research and education institute, WUR is committed to empowering people with the skills and insights needed to drive sustainable change.”

The first global Centre of Excellence was launched in Ohio, US, this week. The second will be opened in Belgium later this year, and the third centre will launch in Morocco in early 2026 with a focus on smallholder farmers.
