Made Uncommon, the owner of Cocoa Chocolatier, Up-Up and Seed & Bean, has acquired Love Cocoa for an undisclosed sum.
Calum Haggerty, the founder of the collective of chocolate brands, confirmed today in a LinkedIn post that he had snapped up Love Cocoa as it approaches its 10th anniversary.
Love Cocoa was founded in 2016 by James Cadbury, the great-great-great grandson of Cadbury founder John Cadbury. He went on to launch oat milk chocolate brand Hip in 2020.
“I first met James Cadbury around 10 years ago at a trade show in London,” Haggerty wrote in the post.
“We were both early in our journeys, building challenger chocolate brands, and we’ve been friendly competitors ever since.
“Today, I’m proud to share that Made Uncommon has acquired Love Cocoa Limited.
“James built something distinctive. A design-led, ethically grounded chocolate brand with a clear mission to make delicious chocolate that does good for the people behind it.
“It’s a tough ride being an entrepreneur, and I’ve got a lot of respect for what James and his team have achieved over the past decade. Starting and scaling any brand takes grit, and this one carried the weight of a name that meant something in British chocolate long before most of us were born,” said Haggerty.
He explained that Cadbury was “stepping back to focus on his growing family” and that he wished him “the very best for what comes next”.
Haggerty has led South Queensferry-based Cocoa Chocolatier since 2013 and launched his Up-Up and Otherly brands in 2022. As reported by The Grocer last month, he recently snapped up organic chocolate brand Seed & Bean’s IP for an undisclosed sum, bringing all four brands under the Made Uncommon umbrella.
Made Uncommon would “honour” Love Cocoa’s “original mission, keep its identity intact, and bring fresh energy as we carry it forward into its second decade”, said Haggerty.
The Grocer understands the acquisition does not include Love Cocoa’s bricks & mortar store, which opened on South Molton Street, Mayfair, last year. According to Google Maps, the store is “temporarily closed”.
