Morrisons has told its head office staff in Bradford they need to go back to work five days a week to get the company “firing on all cylinders”.
The company is understood to have brought in the change earlier this month to around 2,000 staff, whom The Grocer revealed in January had gone back to a four-and-a-half-day week.
Morrisons brought in a flexible four-day week during the Covid pandemic, which involved slightly longer working days and staff working one Saturday every four weeks.
But the company said that had now reverted to a five-day week.
It added that its working from home policies were unaffected by the latest change.
Last week CEO Rami Baitiéh said it had “bounced back” from last year’s Blue Yonder cyberattack, as the supermarket revealed Q2 like-for-like sales up 3.9%.
He said the outlook was looking up for Morrisons but said there was a “challenging” backdrop.
A Morrisons spokesman said: “In the context of a relentlessly competitive UK grocery market and widespread increased cost pressures, we have taken the difficult decision to ask our head office colleagues to move their working pattern from 4.5 days to a full five-day week. This will support us further to deliver improved availability and service for our customers.”
“This does not change our WFH policy – colleagues will still be allowed to work both from home and the office during the week, and individuals may be able to work flexibly if they need to do so.”
