It aims to create a faster, more convenient customer experience

Scotmid is investing £3.5m in hybrid self-checkouts that can be operated by both shoppers and staff.

It aims to create a faster, more convenient customer experience by allowing shoppers to independently operate the checkouts, while the dual screen means colleagues can step in during busy periods to minimise queues.

The tills have also been set up to reduce theft, with customer video captured on-screen. The solution also features a purple light that indicates when a payment is in progress, allowing colleagues to mitigate potential walk-offs.

In addition, the screens on the self-checkouts have been developed to support advertising and retail media opportunities.

The society has rolled out the technology across 90% of its food store estate, as well as in its discount health and beauty brand Semichem locations.

The checkouts have been supplied by Pan Oston and integrated with point of sale provider 4Pos.

“We were particularly impressed by the modular approach,” said Scotmid Co-op procurement and sustainability manager Allan Robertson. “The fact that the same core hardware could be used across traditional tills and self-checkout created real flexibility, allowing us to model different store configurations and future-proof the estate.”

Craig Bevan, UK&I country manager at 4Pos, said: “Flexibility was central to Scotmid’s strategy for readying its estate for the future. Its PoS now gives it the agility to adapt store formats to meet current needs, while still allowing it to pivot towards new demands quickly, easily and cost-effectively as they evolve.”
