Asda returned to winning ways this week, providing the cheapest shop in our ‘Green’ Grocer 33 price comparison survey.
In a basket featuring a range of plant-based, plastic-free, organic, locally sourced, Fairtrade and B Corp-certified brands, Asda was exclusively cheapest for 18 items. Its £79.22 total was more than a fiver lower than its nearest rival.
Ahead of a crucial meeting with supplier sales directors this month, discounts shaved 8.8% off its basket, and it was comfortably ahead on brands including Ben & Jerry’s, Cawston Press and Tony’s Chocolonely. It triumphed on several fresh produce SKUs too, including organic broccoli and Eggs. Even its birdseed was cheapest.
In its H1 results this week Tesco said it had reduced the price of 6,500 products with an average reduction of 9%. But it was 7.9% pricier than Asda, though its £85.50 total included the cheapest wensleydale, Proper lentil chips and Method cleaner.
