Asda came in cheapest for the salmon and cream cheese – but not bagels

Another week, another Asda victory. The Leeds-based supermarket continued its unbeaten streak against its full-range rivals for a third consecutive week.

Asda’s £76.76 total was 18.5% cheaper than Waitrose, 11.2% cheaper than Morrisons and 5.7% cheaper than Sainsbury’s. Only Tesco – against which it was 3.7% cheaper – came close.

As food inflation hit 4% in July [BRC-NIQ Shop Price Monitor] Asda also bucked the trend, delivering a basket that was 3% cheaper than a year ago. Prices rose at all its rivals, by between 2.5% (Waitrose) and 6.3% (Morrisons) year on year.

Overall, beetroot, flapjacks and ranch dressing all recorded double-digit price increases in this week’s basket, while Frylight spray, smoked salmon and bagels were the only SKUs to record double-digit deflation.

Asda also recorded the biggest monthly decrease, with prices 5.3% lower. This was driven by 10 price promotions that delivered £7.18 in savings. And Asda was cheapest on 20 items, exclusively so for 14, including the smoked salmon, Philadelphia, Peroni and Walkers French Fries.

Tesco’s £79.72 basket was down 5% month on month and included five exclusively cheapest SKUs, four on a Clubcard prices promotion, which afforded a saving of £6.75.

Sainsbury’s £81.40 total included just three exclusively cheapest items this week – the Garibaldi biscuits, quiche and pak choi – and savings were limited to just £3.75.

At £1.80, the lowest savings came from Morrisons, however, courtesy of four More loyalty price promotions. It offered three exclusively cheapest items on its £85.39 total.

Waitrose was most competitive in its £94.15 basket on frozen items, with the joint cheapest Häagen-Dazs, and exclusively cheapest pain au chocolat.
