Morrisons in Canning Town exuded a ‘sense of calm’ despite being busy

Morrisons came first in this week’s ‘frozen Christmas’ themed basket with 81 points. The Canning Town store in London scored full marks on shop floor service and facilities.

The store felt “very seasonal and well thought out”, and there was a “sense of calm” despite being busy.

All the counters were well stocked and presented, while the food-to-go section stood out as particularly impressive. There were good facilities available for a store of its size.

Staff were “so helpful with each request”, and came across as “thoughtful and diligent and intuitive”. Meanwhile, checkout service was quick, with only a minute-long wait.

The store scored half marks on availability due to two items being out of stock, while one item was not stocked.

Second place went to Waitrose with 79 points. The Cheadle Hulme branch scored highly thanks to a strong checkout service and store layout.

A strong festive theme was present throughout, with Christmas trees and displays of flowers and wines in the foyer.

The store was logically laid out, making it easy to locate items. The food-to-go section was “fairly well stocked” and the counters were all attractively presented.

Our shopper had to wait just a minute to be served at the checkout, and service was “polite and efficient”. The staff member greeted our shopper and adjusted speed to give our shopper enough time to pack.

Our shopper was “reasonably happy” with the visit. However, while most staff were “well presented” and helpful, some could have been more engaging.

Next up was Tesco Bootle, Liverpool, with 77 points.

The shop scored full marks on shop floor service. Staff were “always available and helpful, all smart in appearance and wearing name badges”.

Service was a little slow – our shopper waited two to three minutes for checkout – but the assistant was “exceptionally friendly, efficient and helpful”.

Store standards were “exceptionally high” overall, while the layout was “excellent and well signposted”. However, it was let down by poor availability, with four items out of stock.

In fourth place this week was Sainsbury’s Oadby. The store scored 65 points, bumped up by “mainly helpful” staff and decent availability. Just two items were out of stock and one was not stocked.

All staff looked “smart and neat”. However, checkout service was slow. Our shopper had to wait six to seven minutes to be served, and there were two mistakes on the receipt.

Store standards were strong overall. Our shopper noted flag bunting above the beers, which felt “very appropriate and colourful”, and there was no litter inside the store (though there was some in the trolley park).

Last came Asda Leyton Mills with 53 points. The store scored zero marks on availability due to three out-of-stock items and nine not stocked, leaving our shopper with 21 items out of 33.

The staff were “too busy and unknowledgeable to be helpful”. Either they told our shopper they did not know where an item was located, or suggested asking another colleague. They also claimed they were unable to check on their systems if an item was available.

Checkout service was relatively slow, and our shopper had to wait four to five minutes to be served.

However, our shopper was impressed at the long queues being processed quickly thanks to sufficient staff on the self-checkout tills.
