Aldi has undercut Lidl in the battle to offer the best-value family Christmas dinner this year.
Having matched Lidl last week with a festive feast for eight for £11.85, Aldi this morning dropped its gravy granules by 10p, bringing the total price of the meal down to £11.75.
Both discounters are offering a 3.05kg whole fresh turkey for £9, (£3.05 per kg), own label Yorkshire puddings (15-pack, 46p) and stuffing mix (90p, two packs), along with four varieties of veg – potatoes (2kg), sprouts (500g), carrots (1kg) and parsnips (500g) – for 8p each.
However, Aldi is now promising own-label gravy granules (300g) for 99p, while Lidl’s price is £1.09.
It makes Aldi’s festive feast £1.47 per person, a penny a head cheaper than Lidl’s.
“I do think this year household bills are a challenge and customers are looking at their spend,” Aldi UK & Ireland CEO Giles Hurley told The Grocer yesterday as he forecast record Christmas sales.
“That’s why it’s so important that I guarantee Aldi will have the lowest prices in the market for your festive meal.”
Sainsbury’s also last week entered the 2025 Christmas dinner wars, revealing a traditional festive feast for six for £13.31.
Working out at £2.21 a head, it comes in considerably more expensive than Aldi and Lidl’s offers, and unlike theirs involves exclusive discounts for loyalty scheme members. However, Sainsbury’s has also thought of vegetarians, unveiling a meat-free option with a plant-based Wellington as the centrepiece, albeit slightly more expensive still, at £13.82 for six, or £2.30 per person for the meal.
All three supermarkets’ festive feast offers are due to run in stores from 19-24 December.
