Co-op said all fresh produce grown across its UK supply chains must be Leaf Marque certified by January 2027

Co-op has announced that all its UK-grown fresh produce will be Leaf (Linking Environment and Farming) Marque certified by January 2027.

The retailer said it would roll out the environmental certification across its stores throughout next year, in partnership with growers and farmers, as part of its ongoing strategy to strengthen resilience in its fresh produce supply chain.

The decision to introduce Leaf standards into the retailer was made in partnership with its grower group The Fresh Produce Forum, which will also be instrumental throughout the process of the standard being rolled out.

“Supporting British agriculture has never been more important and we’re proud to champion home-grown produce across our stores all year around,” said Olivia Theaker, Co-op’s agricultural manager.

“We work with passionate farmers and growers who are going above and beyond in protecting soil health, biodiversity and water resources, and our move to the Leaf Marque has been shaped with them as we continue to remain laser-focused in our sustainability goals and efforts.”

Co-op spends over £700m a year with British farmers and agriculture suppliers and focuses on sourcing British-grown produce including 100% British potatoes and carrots all year round.

“We are delighted that Co-op is extending its long-standing commitment to sustainable sourcing by adopting Leaf Marque across its UK fresh produce supply chains,” said Clare Mike, director of Leaf Marque. “This is a powerful demonstration of the strength of partnerships in driving real, measurable progress towards more climate-positive, nature-friendly farming.”

Those seeking the certification must subscribe to its Integrated Farm Management model, made up of nine sections including: organisation and planning; soil management and fertility; crop health and protection; pollution control and by-product management; animal husbandry; energy efficiency; water management; landscape and nature conservation; and engaging society.

“Through Leaf Marque certification, Co-op growers are embedding the principles of Integrated Farm Management through practices that promote soil health, biodiversity and water stewardship, while helping their customers make trusted, sustainable food choices,” said Mike.

“Together, we’re strengthening the connection between how our food is produced and the positive impact it can have on our environment.”
