Heart of England Co-op has frozen the prices of more than 40 essential food products as it seeks to support budget-conscious shoppers through a climate of high inflation.
Products protected from price increases span meat, fruit, vegetable and dairy products. The freezes came into force on 13 May.
These include Co-op Carrots 500g for 55p, Co-op British Chicken Breast Fillet 300g for £2.60, and Co-op British Medium Free Range eggs six-pack for £1.70.
While no timescale has been set for the freezes, the society said it would work hard to keep them in place throughout the months ahead.
Heart of England Co-op, which runs 38 food stores across Coventry, Warwickshire, Northamptonshire and South Leicestershire, has also created a menu pack to help customers and members make the most of products in its ‘Everyday Prices on Everyday Stuff’ scheme.
CEO Steve Browne said he was conscious of the economic struggles facing shoppers.
“We are an independent co-operative society operating at the very heart of the communities we serve and we understand the financial issues local people face right now,” he said.
“Weekly food budgets are becoming ever tighter. That’s why we have acted to ensure that these essential, everyday items are frozen at fair, affordable prices.
“As a co-operative we have an ethos of fair pricing and giving back to the local community underpinning all our activities. That’s exactly why we have launched this scheme.
“It’s about helping people as much as we can without having to compromise on quality. Many of the products we have offered in the range are produced in this country and so this also supports British farmers and producers.”
He also highlighted that since 2000, the society has gifted more than £1m to community causes in the areas it trades.
“The co-operative way focuses on shopper and member benefits, democratic control and continually putting money back into the community,” said Browne.
“We hope our new price freeze scheme will bring some relief and peace of mind to local people who are feeling the pinch.”
