Sainsbury’s loyalty scheme Nectar has rolled out to delivery platform Deliveroo, meaning members can now collect points when they shop with the supermarket through the app.

Deliveroo is the first of the aggregators to integrate with Nectar, which has 24 million members, and is the second-biggest loyalty card programme in the UK after Tesco Clubcard.

When placing an order via participating Sainsbury’s stores, customers will now be presented with the option to input the card number that is registered to their Nectar account at checkout. One Nectar point is earned per £1 spent on eligible Sainsbury’s products purchased through Deliveroo.

“This integration is a massive win for our customers, who can now earn points on their Sainsbury’s grocery orders, further establishing Deliveroo as the go-to destination for on-demand convenience and loyalty,” said Suzy McClintock, vice president of new verticals at Deliveroo.

“We are delighted to be welcoming Nectar, one of the UK’s most valued and far-reaching loyalty schemes, to Deliveroo,” she added.

Sainsbury’s first partnered with Deliveroo in 2021 initially, with around 300 stores available on the platform. Since then, coverage has expanded to include 1,000 locations.

The major aggregators have been busy integrating retailer loyalty schemes into their apps, so users don’t lose out on points and benefits ordering via the channel.

In February, Co-op began offering in-app access to Member Prices on Deliveroo, a year after doing the same with Uber Eats (a UK supermarket first for a delivery aggregator app).

In March, Morrisons’ loyalty scheme was made available the Deliveroo app, meaning app users can earn More Card points on their rapid Morrisons supermarket grocery purchases. In April, Deliveroo integrated a restaurant loyalty programme on to its app for the first time, in partnership with Wagamama.

In March, Boots announced customers could earn Advantage Card points on purchases made through Deliveroo and Uber Eats. Tesco shoppers have been able to collect Clubcard points on Whoosh orders from the off.

According to latest government figures, 97% of UK shoppers being members of at least one supermarket loyalty scheme, and on average shoppers are members of three schemes.

Deliveroo said supermarket loyalty schemes were “an increasingly integral part of consumer shopping habits, with shoppers continually looking to unlock more for their money when they shop”. It’s decision to onboard them into its app was part of its strategy to “prioritise providing customer experience and value”, it added.
