Eddys, a family-run brand with an aim to transform the single-use cutlery market, has launched a sustainable edible spoon in a ”UK first”.
Launching exclusively in partnership with plant-based cookie bakery The After School Cookie Club, the Eddys spoon is made from a blend of five grains and seeds chosen for flavour, nutritional benefits and texture.
Eddys has ambitions to partner with all major QSR outlets and has confirmed it is already in conversations with many high street brands, offering solutions for savoury, sweet, hot and cold eating occasions.
It comes following extensive research with market research company Goodsense, which delivered “overwhelmingly positive” feedback, according to the brand.
The launch also follows data from Greenpeace UK, which found that the UK uses millions of pieces of single-use plastic cutlery every year, much of which is unrecyclable and eventually fragments into microplastics that enter the food chain.
It is not the only brand looking to offer more environmentally friendly packaging in the foodservice sector. In January, Deliveroo launched a more sustainable takeaway box for UK restaurants to replace conventional plastic-lined containers.
The new packaging, which rolled out to the rapid delivery company’s webstore last month, was created as part of a three-way partnership between Deliveroo, packaging producer Biopack and Sheffield Hallam University.
The winning design, created by apprentices Josephine Shaw and William Shaw, features a new sealing system that uses additional folds in the cardboard to create a more secure locking mechanism.
