Price cuts helped Tesco deliver the cheapest basket this week in another tight battle with Asda.
Tesco’s £89.18 basket was 1.8% cheaper than Asda’s, which came in at £90.86.
Both retailers had 14 cheapest items. Asda was exclusively cheapest for eight SKUs, two more than winner Tesco.
Tesco’s lead largely came from Clubcard promotions on brands, including deep discounts on Activia yoghurts and Aunt Bessie’s Yorkshire puddings. That was bad luck for Asda, which has run similarly priced promotions within the past month.
Tesco’s new Everyday Low Prices strategy was also in very much in play. Cillit Bang, Lenor scent booster and Drink Me Chai powder – all of which fell under the campaign – were exclusively cheaper than rivals without a promotion.

What is The Grocer 33 and how does it work?
This is Tesco’s second win in 2026, and its fifth since the new Grocer 33 year began in July. Asda has notched up 19 wins to date out of 27 mystery shops.
In third place, Sainsbury’s went hardest on promotions. Its £92.64 basket offered 13 deals this week, including 11 price cut promotions, which translated into £9.28 of savings for Nectar members. This included a 37p avocado, inadvertently price-matching this week’s winter veg promotion from Morrisons. Tesco, however, was 3.7% cheaper.
Morrisons was further behind on £97.63. The Bradford-based retailer was this week’s biggest riser – up 3.5% year on year – and its discounts were the shallowest. Still, Morrisons More members were able to pick up the cheapest 19 Crimes wine, while its own-label lamb mince, vine tomatoes and comté cheese had the edge.
Checking out at £108.70, Waitrose was 11.3% dearer than Morrisons and 21.9% more than Tesco. It was joint-cheapest on just three SKUs this week.
