Smith was FSA boss when the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme was introduced

Former FSA boss Tim Smith has been given a peerage in one of Keir Starmer’s last moves as PM.

Smith, who is now chair of Cranswick was among 26 new Lords announced by Downing Street yesterday.

He served as chief executive of the agency from 2008 to 2012 before joining Tesco as group quality director, where he worked until 2017.

He joined Cranswick as a non-executive director in 2018 and became chair in 2021.

Before his time at the FSA, Smith led a number of food businesses including Arla and Sara Lee as CEO.

Smith also chaired the Trade and Agriculture Commission and the Food & Drink Sector Council. He is now a member of the Food Strategy Advisory Board.

His nomination from the government praised Smith for his “distinguished career in the food, agriculture and retail sectors”.

It said as FSA boss he had “strengthened consumer confidence, introducing the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme”.

“For a long time, a lot of us in the food industry have been saying that we need more people in Parliament with genuine experience of the sector,” said Smith.

“I’m obviously really honoured that I’ve been given that opportunity and I am looking forward to drawing on that experience over the coming months and years.”
