Oral health startup Gutology has raised £1.8m in venture capital funding as it seeks to capitalise on demand for gut health products.
The business intends to use the backing from Active Partners – alongside Mercia Ventures – to accelerate product development across oral care and synbiotic formulations (a mixture of probiotics and prebiotics) in other categories.
Gutology sells a range of products, including a liquid prebiotic oral rinse and dental bamboo floss, but its flagship offering is a fluoride-free toothpaste made with natural ingredients and designed to support a balanced gut microbiome.
It has served more than 100,000 customers since launching in 2024, with its Oral Biome+ line ranking in the top 10 toothpaste products on Amazon UK and holding the number one category sales position at Planet Organic.
Founded by Ollie Gallant, Gutology has grown from a health podcast into a direct-to-consumer oral care disruptor brand.
“For decades, oral care has largely worked against the oral microbiome,” Gallant said. “Toothpaste is one of the most consistent daily habits people have, making it a compelling starting point.
“This funding enables us to accelerate innovation in postbiotic and synbiotic oral care, while building products that deliver performance and integrate seamlessly into daily routines.”
Gutology plans to branch out beyond oral care in the long term to launch microbiome-informed products centred on beneficial bacteria for everyday routines in other categories.
Funds from the £1.8m will be put towards expansion in the German and US markets, support for retail partnerships in the UK and overseas, increased clinical R&D in postbiotic and synbiotic oral care, and the development of the next generation of synbiotic consumable products.
Anna Sweetman of Active Partners added: “Gutology is meeting a clear and fast-growing consumer demand for more evidence-based, microbiome-friendly personal care products.
“Starting in oral care, the team has built impressive early traction with products that balance scientific rigour and five-star consumer feedback. We believe Gutology is well-positioned to lead the shift towards personal care products designed to better align with the microbiome – from what we use on our bodies to what we bring into our homes – and we’re excited to support the company as it enters its next phase of growth.”
Consumer-focused Active has invested in a long list of fmcg companies, including Huel, Freja, Botivo, All Things Butter, Stocked, Marleybones and Katkin.
