M&S checkouts were unable to accept contactless payments

M&S has apologised to customers over a “cyber incident” that left stores unable to take contactless payments.

The retailer said it had been managing the incident “over the last few days” and had made temporary changes to operations and engaged cybersecurity experts.

“I’m writing to let you know that over the last few days M&S has been managing a cyber incident,” M&S CEO Stuart Machin said in an email to customers.

“To protect you and the business, it was necessary to make some small changes to our store operations, and I am sincerely sorry if you experience any inconvenience.”

The episode left customers unable to pay for shopping by tapping their payment card, though stores were still accepting chip & pin card payments on bank holiday Monday.

Machin said click & collect online orders also faced potential disruption.

“Importantly, our stores remain open, and our website and app are operating as normal,” he said. “There is no need for you to take any action at this time and if the situation changes, we will let you know.

“There may be some limited delays to your click & collect order, which we are working hard to resolve.

“I know how much our customers trust M&S, and that trust is incredibly precious to us,” he added.

“We have been working hard with the best experts to manage this, and I want to thank them and my colleagues for their hard work.”
