Aldi beat discounter rival Lidl by 16p, and was cheaper for four products

Aldi has claimed another win in the first ‘Super Grocer 33’ of the year, beating rival Lidl by just 16p in our survey of seven retailers.

The discounters were largely neck-and-neck across most of this week’s basket, with a total of 25 price-matched items.

Aldi had the edge over Lidl thanks to lower prices on its kitchen towels, oranges, cheddar and cucumber. But Lidl mounted a valiant challenge, with lower prices for basil, Heinz ketchup and own-labelfrozen onion rings and mustard.

Aldi’s lead over the full-range supermarkets was far more comfortable. Its £57.19 basket was 4.9% ahead of third-placed Tesco (£60.14). Aldi was 5.9% cheaper than Asda (£60.76), and 7.7% cheaper than Sainsbury’s (£61.99).

Morrisons was further behind with a £66.64 total, while Aldi was some 30% cheaper than Waitrose’s £81.89.

Tesco sold the cheapest ham and mustard, while Asda was cheapest on Nutella, houmous and Cola-Cola Zero. Sainsbury’s offered four exclusively cheapest items with Nectar prices on organic cucumber, San Miguel lager and kitchen towels.

Our pricing survey spotted big differences on seasonal favourites. Strawberries, cream and meringues totalled £4.23 at each of the discounters, compared with £5.11 at Asda and £6.55 at Waitrose.

Spanish food fans would also be better off at the discounters. Chorizo slices and manchego came to £4.18 in both Aldi and Lidl, compared with £4.39 at Tesco and £8.89 at Waitrose.

The biggest price rises this week were on meat. At £4.11, a four-pack of beef quarter pounders was 35% dearer than a year ago (£3.50), while ham slices are up 25%.

The biggest average price cut was for own label all-purpose cleaner, which was 13% cheaper than last year.
