Pret a Manger is to launch a new lunchtime category, Super Plates, in response to a rise in customer demand for larger salads.
The new category will offer bigger, more nutrient-packed salads in four flavours: Chipotle Chicken, Butternut Mezze, Miso Salmon and Shawarma Chicken.
The Super Plates were created by the sandwich and coffee chain's in-house head of food and registered nutritionist Anna Tebbs, and will be made in Pret's kitchens by team members daily.
They feature nine new premium ingredients and two product improvements, including larger Golden Roasted Salmon portions.
The salads, which will debut in over 250 shops nationwide from 9 July, are nearly 60% bigger than the food-to-go chain’s existing salad range and weigh around 450g.
The Chipotle Chicken variant promises 49g of protein and is made up of British chicken breast coated in chipotle with a new Mexican-inspired black bean mole sauce made using ancho chilli powder, ground cinnamon and cumin. This is accompanied with brown rice, quinoa, red pepper and avocado.
The Butternut Mezze Super Plate, which promises 18g of fibre, combines butternut squash with chilli aubergine, kale, chickpeas, pickled cabbage and carrot.
The Miso Salmon meal, which has 36g of protein, includes salmon, togarashi seeds, avocado, black rice, quinoa, broccoli and edamame soya beans, while the Shawarma Chicken, with 49g of protein, features chicken breast in a shawarma spiced sauce, chickpeas, kale, red pepper and cucumber sticks.
“Carefully created for customers who are after more substantial on-the-go options, these four new plates are bigger, bolder and more balanced,” said Tebbs. "They have been designed to have delicious bursts of flavour in every bite and the four new Super Plates offer something for everyone."
To mark the launch, selected shops will be giving away 30 free Super Plates on 9 July. Pret will also be giving away 500 of the salads from midday on 15 and 16 July from a pop-up on Cheapside, London.
