Asda’s winning streak continued this week with a basket that easily beat its full-range rivals on price.
Asda’s £63.31 total was 4.5% cheaper than second-placed Tesco and secured its eighth victory out of the first 10 weeks of the current Grocer 33 year.
Asda was cheapest for 20 products and exclusively so for 15 – three times more than its nearest rival. In a week when many families are preparing to go back to school, Asda was cheapest for several lunchbox staples including Walkers crisps, Soreen lunchbox loaves, Dairylea Dunkers and Frubes.
Tesco was £2.97 behind. Its £66.28 basket was exclusively cheapest on five SKUs, including jazz apples, mushrooms and Tenderstem broccoli on Clubcard promotions. And with a 0.6% reduction across the basket, Tesco was the only retailer this week to have cut prices year on year.

What is The Grocer 33 and how does it work?
Asda was 6.3% cheaper than Morrisons (£67.56). Morrisons was exclusively cheapest for Penguins and Fruit Shoots and, thanks to a deep discount, also on the Oyster Bay sauvignon blanc for parents who may be toasting a return to normality.
In fourth place this week, Sainsbury’s (£68.18) was exclusively cheapest for just the Birds Eye chicken fillets. It offered a price-cut promotion whereas three rivals included the same SKU in a ‘buy four’ multibuy.
Waitrose’s promotions were the deepest this week. Discounts totalled £6.45 and reduced its basket total by 8.6%. However, it managed just one exclusively cheapest item, with a 20% discount on the Hovis Seed Sensations loaf. Waitrose was £11.79 more expensive than Asda and £6.92 more than Sainsbury’s.
On average, our basket cost 2.3% more than last year and 4.4% less than a month ago, with every retailer showing a month-on-month reduction.
