Last week came a posh Christmas pricing victory – now Asda has triumphed again for our second Christmas Grocer 33 basket, this time focused on budget.
This week’s basket was designed for shoppers looking to host Christmas without breaking the bank. Those numbers are growing: this week NIQ said shoppers were looking for an “affordable” Christmas.
At £81.98, Asda’s basket was £2.90 (3.4%) cheaper than Tesco’s, and over 10% cheaper than all other full-range rivals.
A Rollback deal on frozen turkey crowns made the difference. At £11.75 for 1.75kg, Asda’s was £3.65 cheaper than Tesco. Its gammon and bacon were also cheaper than its rivals, and chipolatas joint-cheapest.
After nailing the lowest-priced own-label champagne last week, this week Asda’s premium own-label prosecco was cheapest. In total, it offered the lowest price on 19 products and exclusively so for 11 of those.
Tesco was the only one to come close to Asda, with a basket totalling £84.88. More than half of the items were on promotion and its 17 price cuts for Clubcard members totalled £19.20. It sold the cheapest Terry’s chocolate orange, Nozeco and cheese selection.
Asda was 10.3% cheaper than Morrisons, which came in at £91.43. However, Morrisons also lowered prices the most year on year, with discounts contributing to a 7.5% reduction on 2024 prices.
Asda was 11.6% cheaper than Sainsbury’s, which sold the cheapest potatoes, roasting tray and Christmas pudding.
Waitrose didn’t have any exclusively cheapest items this week. With a £118.02 basket, Asda was 30.5% cheaper.
Overall, our basket cost 0.4% more than last year, led by price rises on sunflower oil, stuffing mix and Maltesers. It was 7.4% less costly than last month as Seasonal discounts kicked in.
