Co-op has launched a range of own-brand GLP-1 friendly ready meals in a UK convenience first.
The range, which forms part of a new ‘Good Fuel’ health offer, features four mini meals tailored to shoppers with smaller appetites as the use of weight-loss drugs continues to grow.
Each meal is packed with protein, fibre, and at least two portions of the 5 a day. Inspired by global cuisines and priced at £3.50 each, the meals include Butternut Squash, Beans & Grains 250g, Chicken & Sweet Potato Penang Curry 250g, and Chicken & Courgette Alfredo pasta 250g.
The range, which is called ‘Good Fuel – Power Up Your Plate’ will hit stores on 7 January. Until 22 January, the meals will be on offer to members to buy any two for £5.50, or for non-members, two for £6.50.
“Our members and customers are changing the way they approach health, looking for healthy and tasty choices that provide a boost of health benefits like protein and fibre, with meals that count towards their 5 a day, as well as delivering plenty of flavour,” said Co-op retail trading director Nicole Tallant.
“There is also a growing need to cater for smaller appetites with meals that provide the quality without so much of the quantity. This whole new range is aimed at supporting shoppers’ wellbeing in a meaningful, accessible and convenient way.”
The new Good Fuel offer also comes with a new healthy range, which includes a choice of five full-sized meals featuring high-protein, slow-releasing carbohydrates, and added-benefit ingredients such as gut-friendly fibres, and nutrient-dense vegetables.
Co-op said it had been developed for shoppers looking for “delicious, easy-to-cook, healthy meals”, with each portion containing at least one of the 5 a day.
The range includes Piri Piri Chicken with Rice 380g – a high-protein dish with marinated cooked British chicken breast pieces in a spicy piri piri sauce, cooked brown rice, broccoli florets, carrots and red quinoa. The range is on offer to Co-op members who can buy any two for £6, while non-members can buy any two for £6.50 from 7 January until 22 January inclusive.
The Co-op’s move into GLP-1 friendly meals follows Morrisons, which claimed to be the first UK supermarket to stock ‘GLP-1 friendly’ ready meals as part of a major own-label shake-up in January.
The supermarket has teamed up with Applied Nutrition to launch 53 products, spanning fresh, frozen and ambient categories.
Hitting stores today (2 January), new products will include salad bowls, pizzas, high-protein cheeses, high-protein pasta, high-protein ice cream and more.
