Crosta Mollica has unveiled a range of chilled, Roman-style pizzas and a trio of dough bites.
Called Collezione Romana, the range maintains “the essence and flavour” of Crosta Mollica’s core Neapolitan range, but with a “thinner and crispier and larger” base.
Each pizza has a diameter of 32cm, compared to Crosta Mollica’s existing pizzas, which measure in at 27cm.
Collezione Romana will debut with Portofino, Bosco Di Alba and Bolzano.
Portofino Topped is topped with buffalo mozzarella, fior di latte and yellow cherry tomatoes, and comes with basil sauce to add after cooking. It was “the best version of a margherita you can find in the supermarket”, Crosta Mollica claimed.
Bosco Di Alba is a white-based pizza with garlic sauce, truffles and grilled mushrooms.
Bolzano features spiced sausage and red onion cooked in balsamic vinegar and rosemary.
All three pizzas will launch into Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose in September, each with an rsp of £8.50.
Regional differences
According to Crosta Mollica chairman David Milner: “There is no comparison between a Neapolitan pizza and a Roman one.”
“One has a more puffy, soft and chewy crust while the other a thinner, crispy base using olive oil.
“One favours paired back and minimalist toppings, while the other has more variety.
“In the UK, the education of what makes pizzas from different regions unique and special has been lost along the way and we are using NPD to bring it back.”
Crosta Mollica has also added chilled Pizelle Dough Bites (rsp: £3.50/11), which will hit Sainsbury’s and Ocado in September in three variants: Garlic & Chive, Speck & Ricotta and Tomato & Olive. Garlic & Chive will also launch in Tesco.
“We wanted to create a product which was more inherently Italian and reflected the passion and culture of mealtimes than the garlic butter-laden doughball,” explained Milner.
