Lidl has added 20 new products to its Vemondo range

Lidl has increased sales of own-label plant-based products and milk alternatives by nearly 700% since 2020, according to the discounter.

The supermarket has by far surpassed are targeted 400% increase by 2025, managing to grow sales of own-label plant-based products and milk alternatives by 694% within the time-frame.

Lidl said it aligned with its commitment to meeting Eat-Lancet Planetary Health Diet goals of cutting consumption of certain foods including red meat and sugar by 50% by 2050.

The discounter said it was also responding to growing demand for plant-based products, including with its Vemondo Plant range, which has this week been boosted by 20 new product launches. The new lines include multiple varieties of marinated tofu, falafel and tortellini.

The Vemondo range was launched last year and is certified by the Vegetarian Society.

“Surpassing our 2025 meat-free and milk-alternative sales target marks a significant milestone in our wider healthy and sustainable diets agenda and supports our long-term goal of aligning with the Planetary Health Diet by 2050, a vital lever in the net zero transition,” said Amali Bunter, Lidl GB head of responsible sourcing and ethical trade.

“We’re proud to be leading the industry with our protein transition goal of ensuring that plant-based protein sales (by tonnage) account for 25% of our total protein sales by 2030. Alongside this, we are continuing to work closely with our farming partners on the sustainability credentials of our animal-based protein products, providing our customers with a full offering of sustainable choices when they visit our stores.”
