Dried fruit and nut brand Whitworths has ventured into meat alternatives with a mince product made from walnuts.
Nutty Kitchen Supermince (rsp: £3.20/200g) is made from walnuts, lentils and red quinoa. It has debuted in Original, containing only those three ingredients, alongside Mexican, Italian and Indian variants, which are enhanced with herbs and spices.
Whitworths claims the innovation is the UK’s “first unprocessed meat-free mince”. It should be cooked in the same way as traditional mince and could be used in meals including spaghetti bolognese and chilli, the supplier said.
Mexican and Italian will launch on Ocado on 10 September, with all four variants hitting Whitworths’ webstore by the end of September. Original will also be included in Gousto meal kits from January.
According to Whitworths, the innovation will help address what it refers to as the UK’s “fibre gap”, with most adults consuming only two-thirds of the recommended daily intake.
“We know shoppers are increasingly frustrated with plant-based products that feel over-processed or fall short on taste and texture,” said Whitworths commercial director Phil Gowland.
“Whitworths Nutty Kitchen Supermince is different. It’s simple, unprocessed, natural and bursting with essential nutrients we all need on a daily basis whilst still delivering that meaty texture people love.”
Whitworths unveiled a “transformational” redesign, which sought to better communicate the “nutritional power” of its products, in 2024.
The relaunch was backed by a £2m campaign, ‘Rethink Small’, which aimed to encourage shoppers to “reappraise nuts, seeds and dried fruit and drive further consumption” across mealtimes and snacks.
