A newly established company has started producing a range of unusual oils as an alternative to traditional oils used in British kitchens.

Calon Lân, based in north Wales, is selling its hemp, avocado and camelina oils in bright, bilingually labelled bottles that highlight the health benefits of each variant. The oils are priced at £5.99 for 250ml.

The company's director, Geraint Hughes, is especially enthusiastic about the camelina oil, which he claims is one of the best natural sources of Omega-3 and vitamin E and a good source of beneficial polyunsaturated fatty acids and antioxidants.

The oil is described as 'up front and bold with a bit of attitude', and is recommended for use in salad dressings, pasta sauces or as a dipping oil.

"It is good for cooking and has a relatively high smoking point, similar to olive oil," he said.

Calon Lân's oils are currently available in a handful of independent retailers in the north of Wales.
