Retailers seem to think consumers are giving the usual January detox a miss this year, as wine extends its lead at the top of the Promo Dynamic table.

There were a total of 247 wine offers this week, up from 208 last week. The category had almost three times as many deals as second-placed crisps, snacks and nuts, which as a category had 87 offers, 81 of which were split evenly over the big four. Spirit offers slipped into third place.

Walkers, the top brand in the category, had the most offers, with 30 of the total, and KP took second. But there was some evidence of a January health kick, as healthier brand Ryvita took the third spot. KP took second.

Discounting in the category was fairly modest, the typical saving being just 31%. A third of the offers were half price or more. Stocking up on this week’s snack deals would cost £168.87, saving £77.44 on the usual £246.31 price tag.

The best offer in the top 50 was once again Asda’s 3-for-£10 wine deal, offering a 58.3% saving on three bottles of Andrew Peace Semillon Chardonnay. The biggest cash saving, for the second week running, was the hefty £55 discount on the half-price Oral B toothbrush at Waitrose.

This again enabled Waitrose to be the retailer with the biggest saving in the top 50 this week, though Asda had the most offers, with 13 of the 50 versus three at Waitrose. Buying this week’s top 50 deals would cost £193.94, a 48.1% saving on recommended selling prices.
