A smokehouse in rural Shropshire is claiming to be the first British business to export organic produce to Russia.

The Organic Smokehouse in Clunbury has clinched a six-figure deal with Russian food distributor Arivera for its award-winning oak-smoked Shetland salmon. The first 100kg shipment of unsliced sides and 500g packs has been dispatched and is destined for top restaurants, government offices, big businesses and consumers through Arivera's mail order website.

The Organic Smokehouse already exports to California, Monaco and Japan, said owner Michael Leviseur, but the Russian deal has eclipsed them all. "We're still not 100% sure how they found us - we think it must have been through our Soil Association connections."

The company already supplies Harrods, delicatessens and restaurants in the UK and has also set its sights on supplying Waitrose, although talks are at an early stage.
