>>shs sales director Peter Butler

SHS does sales and marketing for many of the brand leaders in the grocery market, including WKD, Douwe Egberts, Durex, Finish and Shloer.
As sales director, Peter Butler is responsible for leading a sales and marketing team capable of delivering results for its clients.
He joined the company in 1999 and has been motivating his team of 60 ever since.
He says that by setting clear goals and celebrating success the company has become stronger. “I also have to make sure that we have the best business relationship with our key customers, whether it’s Tesco, Costcutter or JD Wetherspoon,” says Burton.
“My working week has to pull all this together. Last week was quite a typical week. It began with a performance review of all of our principal brands and to find out what we need to do to deliver.
“I spent Monday afternoon with our recruitment consultants carrying out interviews because we are expanding our sales force. I also talked to them about training programmes.
“On Tuesday morning I visited a principal client’s office for a quality review meeting. This helps me understand
clearly what the client’s goals are for the brand and then I am able to debrief my commercial team.
“On Wednesday I went out to talk to the wholesale sector about the general trade issues and the following day I caught up with what’s going on in the market.
“And on Friday I had a wonderful day out with two of my sales guys - I can keep my team motivated by spending time with them.
“An important part of the job is to check up on stock compliance with the retailers and fixture compliance with the cash & carries.
“One of our big opportunities is to maximise the compliance, especially when we are dealing with fast moving promotions.”
