Nearly four in 10 shoppers plan to buy less prepared food and more fresh produce in the next six months in an attempt to cut shopping bills, according to research.

A survey by management consultancy Booz & Company indicated that 28% of British shoppers were looking to reduce the amount they spent on food, and 38% planned to cut back on prepared food.

A quarter of shoppers also said that they planned to reduce the amount of organic foods they bought.

"Consumers are now increasingly price-sensitive. Retailers and manufacturers must collaborate in building more sophisticated pricing capabilities," said Booz & Company partner Richard Rawlinson.

The survey also indicated nearly half of shoppers planned to ditch online shopping in order to take advantage of supermarket deals and promotions.
