Asda said it rang up 18 million transactions in the week before Christmas and that 38 customers-a-second went through its checkouts on December 23.

The UK’s second largest grocer said a record 252 of its 265 stores broke the £1m sales barrier in the run-up to Christmas.

Asda said two of its 12 supercentres in Minworth, Sutton Coldfield and Havant in Hampshire, notched up sales of more than £4m. The other 10 all generated sales above £3m during the period

In Scotland, the company’s store in Livingston had record pre-Christmas weekly sales just short of £4m.
