Asda has won back its cheapest retailer crown, with its £58.36 basket comfortably undercutting last week's usurper Morrisons by £2.07.

Asda provided 29 of the cheapest or joint-cheapest items and had the most promotions. The retailer's basket boasted just one price rise - with Walkers crisps up 5p at the end of a promotion. Small reductions had been made to three items - Campo Viejo Crianza Rioja and Robinsons orange were down 2p apiece and Seeds of Change sauce was down 1p.

Two significant price cuts and having 12 of the cheapest or joint-cheapest items was not enough to net Morrisons first place. The retailer upped the price of just one item, increasing white sugar by 5p.

Aunt Bessie's Yorkshire Puddings were up 3p, McCain chips up 19p, recycled toilet tissue 6p and white sugar 5p. The retailer cut the price of two items - Walkers crisps by 7p and Robinsons orange by 2p.

There was a lot of pricing activity, with two significant hikes - courgettes up 20p/kg and sweet potatoes up 41p. Among its reductions was balsamic vinegar down 9p, fruit scones down 9p, Seeds of Change bolognese sauce down 1p and tinned sardines down 3p.
