Monsanto Roundup weedkiller and GM maize implicated in ‘shocking’ new cancer study

The world’s best-selling weedkiller, and a genetically modified maize resistant to it, can cause tumours, multiple organ damage and lead to premature death, new research published today reveals.

In the first ever study to examine the long-term effects of Monsanto’s Roundup weedkiller, or the NK603 Roundup-resistant GM maize also developed by Monsanto, scientists found that rats exposed to even the smallest amounts, developed mammary tumours and severe liver and kidney damage as early as four months in males, and seven months for females, compared with 23 and 14 months respectively for a control group.

“This research shows an extraordinary number of tumours developing earlier and more aggressively - particularly in female animals. I am shocked by the extreme negative health impacts,” said Dr Michael Antoniou, molecular biologist at King’s College London, and a member of CRIIGEN, the independent scientific council which supported the research.

GM crops have been approved for human consumption on the basis of 90-day animal feeding trials. But three months is the equivalent of late adolescence in rats, who can live for almost two years (700 days), and there have long been calls to study the effects over the course of a lifetime.

The peer-reviewed study, conducted by a team of researchers at the University of Caen, found that rats fed on a diet containing NK603 Roundup resistant GM maize, or given water containing Roundup at levels permitted in drinking water, over a two-year period, died significantly earlier than rats fed on a standard diet.

Up to half the male rats and 70% of females died prematurely, compared with only 30% and 20% in the control group. Across both sexes the researchers found that rats fed Roundup in their water or NK603 developed two to three times more large tumours than the control group. By the beginning of the 24th month, 50-80% of females in all treated groups had developed large tumours, with up to three per animal.

By contrast, only 30% of the control group were affected. Scientists reported the tumours “were deleterious to health due to [their] very large size,” making it difficult for the rats to breathe, [and] causing problems with their digestion which resulted in haemorrhaging.

The paper, published in the scientific journal Food and Chemical Toxicology today, concluded that NK603 and Roundup caused similar damage to the rats’ health, whether they were consumed together or on their own. The team also found that even the lowest doses of Roundup, which fall well within authorised limits in drinking tap water, were associated with severe health problems.

“The rat has long been used as a surrogate for human toxicity. All new pharmaceutical, agricultural and household substances are, prior to their approval, tested on rats. This is as good an indicator as we can expect that the consumption of GM maize and the herbicide Roundup, impacts seriously on human health,” Antoniou added.

Roundup is widely available in the UK, and is recommended on Gardeners Question Time. But this also represents a potential blow for the growth of GM Foods.

With the global population expected to increase to nine billion by 2050, the UN has said that global food production must increase by 50%. And a consultation led by DEFRA entitled Green Food Project recommended as recently as 10 July 2012 that GM must be reassessed as a possible solution.

Some 85% of maize grown in the US is GM, while 70% of processed foods contain GM ingredients without GM labelling. In the UK and Europe GM maize is not consumed directly by humans but is widely used in animal feed without the requirement for GM labelling.

Antoniou said there could be no doubting the credibility of this peer-reviewed study. “This is the most thorough research ever published into the health effects of GM food crops and the herbicide Roundup on rats.”

Led by Professor Gilles-Eric Seralini, the researchers studied 10 groups, each containing 10 male and 10 female rats, over their normal lifetime. Three groups were given Roundup – developed by Monstanto – in their drinking water at three different levels consistent with exposure through the food chain from crops sprayed with the herbicide.

Three groups were fed diets containing different proportions of Roundup resistant maize at 11%, 22% and 33%. Three groups were given both Roundup and the GM maize at the same three dosages. The control group was fed an equivalent diet with no Roundup or NK603 containing 33% of non-GM maize.

A spokesman for Monsanto said: “We will review it thoroughly, as we do all studies that relate to our products and technologies.”

  • It goes to show that it's worth doing animal testing, even just to show that this would have been an epidemic that hit the next generation's 40-yr olds. There's no way a normal individual could avoid all GM slipped into various products as they eat out or grab their lunch at a sandwich bar, and going veggie hardly helps either.

    I do support the principle of GM and it will be necessary but for goodness sake it must be tested thoroughly!

    I'm sure that if one of the GM companies did the same research they would manage to prove that Roundup is not only safe but good for you. But then they are hardly independent.

    Why would ANY of the rats in the control group die "prematurely" if they're not being fed something which is harmful?

    Maybe because 700 days being an average life span for rats, a proportion of the control rats (in this situation, 20 to 30%) may die earlier, and some (20 to 30%) later... And when instead of 20 to 30% you get 70%, indeed there is a big problem!

  • I'm not sure Brandon but that "30% and 20% in the control group" dying prematurely might be the group that was "given water containing Roundup at levels permitted in drinking water" in the previous paragraph. Don't know, seems weird that this would be used for the control group.

  • Very disappointed that The Grocer has run with this story without checking into the credentials of this Professor. Glad to see that many others commenting can see the bias of this study. The biggest human epidemiological study has been going on for the last 15 years in North America, with no ill health effects. This study is an anomaly at best, contrived at worst.

  • Well, this article conveniently leaves out the fact that many experts ARE indeed questioning the credibility of this study. Absolutely disgusting that criticism is left out of the article. How about from a less ideologically bent Reuters article on the same study...

    "Experts asked by reporters to review the scientific paper advised extreme caution in drawing conclusions from it."

    'The statistical methods are unconventional and probabilities are not adjusted for multiple comparisons. There is no clearly defined data analysis plan and it would appear the authors have gone on a statistical fishing trip.'

    Mark Tester, a research professor at the Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics at the University of Adelaide, said the study's findings raised the question of why no previous studies have flagged up similar concerns.

    'If the effects are as big as purported, and if the work really is relevant to humans, why aren't the North Americans dropping like flies? GM has been in the food chain for over a decade over there - and longevity continues to increase inexorably," he said in an emailed comment.'

    So the control group developed mammary tumours and severe liver and kidney damage between 14 & 23 months - so between middle age to end of life.

    Why are these rats in the control developing tumours? Were all the rats used for this experiment genetically prone to developing tumours in the first place?

  • I hate all pesticides, but rats and tumors are hardly an ideal model in this case. Rats are short-lived in general and if not spayed by the age of 3 months, females are highly susceptible to mammary tumors. Males have mammary tissue as well. Curious to see the article itself, but abhor the animal testing on these highly intelligent and affectionate animals. Like Michael Santiago says - control what you eat and you control the demand. Buy organic and from local farms where possible.

  • rats are used primarily because they are so sensitive to anything and can grow tumors with the best of care. Guinea Pigs, also, are very sensitive, more so than rats, but rats procreate at a faster pace, and GPs have a high natural infant mortality rate. The naked mole rat, in contrast, live 25 years or more and doesn't get sick and it takes a lot of effort to force a tumor on them.

    I really hate animal testing. however, I see the necessity of it in today's society for some things like this. It isn't rocket science to know that a poison can harm you. What they wanted to know in these tests is the methodology of the harm, and they have found it.

    By finding HOW the harm is done, it gives a direction to create countermeasures, and alternatives.

  • Rats are supposed to be the FDA's controlled group. So when they have adverse effects from food including tumors and dying because of what they are fed, the product tested is withdrawn from sale, as per their policy. Not forgetting that whatever we spray onto the ground eventually ends up in our drinking water. Lets see if the FDA can live up to their policy. Are you roundup ready?

  • This study has some Major problems and has been called a statistical fishing expedition by experts in the field. Also the rats used in the study are already prone to very high rates of cancer and there were serious methodological issues.

  • @Brandon- 20 to 30% died prematurely in the control group. It's just what happened- and it's probably safe to assume that if you collect a bunch of mice and take care of them until their deaths, approximately a quarter may die prior to fulfilling their life expectancy.

  • Pognonec is correct: 20-30% of the rats dying "prematurely" is no different than 20-30% dying "later than average"; in fact, it must even out for the "average" to be what it is.

    So, now, 70% die "prematurely". Provided that the testing was up to scientific standards, we can infer that GMO maize/Roundup shortens the life-expectancy of rats.

    Now, that doesn't mean it affects humans the same way, but I for one am going to be a lot more pro-active about avoiding GMO corn and corn-based foods and sweeteners. Cancer scares the crap out of me.

  • One study like this is not enough to prove anything. When we see this type of research being repeatable in separate independent, controlled tests, then we can starts to draw some conclusions.

  • This study is just a hit piece designed to give this result, it's clear if you read the full study carefully. It's surprising it made it through to a Journal.

    So you have claims from Anti-GMO with flawed cherry picked studies saying it's not safe and that the company scientists studies are flawed and not safe as they have a financial interest. If both sides practice sloppy biased science who can we trust?

    I actually think the GMO companies have a lot to lose if they release provably unsafe product, you don't want to be the next Vioxx with megamillions lawsuits against you every day. So I trust them a little bit more than some completely anti-gmo there's no possible way any gmo could be safe crackpot. but just a little...

  • Whether we like it or not, the human species is already involved in a case history study.... essentially without a control group. This GMO/herbicide poisoning of the species is likely the greatest threat to humanity today.

    The results found in the rats are already prevalent in humans. Though not easy to separate the effect of GMOs from other toxins, the fact is we will only win this battle if we come to our senses as a country and world, and revert to following the Laws of Nature. Nature works to promote activities that help to promote health, not death. The fact that humans support the practices of GMOs and herbicides (both destructive to life and the environment), suggests we are already at the stage of "muddy brain."

Reason ? as Scientific American magazine explains it : “Agritech companies have given themselves veto power over the work of independent researchers.” Scientists must literally ask these corporations for permission before publishing independent research on genetically modified crops.   • Michael Santiago, going veg and off processed foods wont help if your veg are grown from Monsanto seeds.... that is the problem.

    We vegans are in a bad boat if your not buying GMO free and so unless marked GMO free you can assume it contains GMO veg.

    So vote YES to mandatory food labeling of GMO's AND get Monsanto OUT OF OUR SEED and FOOD!!!

  • Im a bit confused on the control group stats as well. I understand that 'average lifespan' can't be an indicator of how long each rat will live, but I am curious to know if there is something that commonly causes tumors in rats? As a child I had a pet albino rat and it died after developing a large tumor on its belly.... Im interested to know what the conditions of the 'control group' was, regardless.

  • Irrelevant of studies and testing done.What i do not understand, is that we supposedly live in a democracy, yet we are not given the right to chose what we ingest. If i do not want to have GM modified food, then why isn't everything labeled as such. It should be my choice what i eat, not the governments or corporations.

  • I have been involved in the agrochemical industry for nearly 30yrs.

    We need a thorough and balanced review of the study. It seems to go against all the evidence available to date on health risks, but we must keep an open mind and be prepared to act if there are unacceptable levels of risk.

This is not a study- where are the control groups, monitoring, testing, follow up? This is a mass human experiment being perpetrated without our consent and no oversight. But don't worry, I'm sure Monsanto and the others have our best interests at heart.
    GM is about owning the food supply, not improving it.

  • I think it's more that if confirms with a fairly high confidence that something won't give people cancer. I these rats which can get cancer from anything, don't get cancer from this then it very likely ok for humans.

  • In one study, rats were fed GM soybeans and the controls were fed organic soybeans and it had shown that the GM-fed rats had a significant higher rate of cancer than the non-GM. These were soybeans, straight up. Not poison. And yet, it still showed worse effects.

  • the ones who try to deny the research work are seemed very "scientific", but where their rationality goes when they completely ignoring that such GMO food had been pushed into market before sufficient safety test for human being?
    is it much more a common sense that Monsanto should give enough evidence show their seeds are safe than such tests carrying our for people to withdrawing those seeds back from market?

    Cancer is now the #1 cause of death in the US. Is GMO consumption to blame? Who can say...and that is just as Monsanto would like it. "Longevity continues to increase" as do degenerative diseases. Rotting away your last 10 years in a nursing home doesn't say much for longevity. Would it not be wiser to continue doing LONG term testing on rats rather than on humans? There are no FDA studies on GMO foods yet they green light them on the studies of the creators of these franken-foods. Just like Big Pharma doing the studies on their own drugs and we all know how that has been working out. (Legal)Drug caused illness and deaths are significant in the US.
    Just let me know with a label that it's GMO and so that I may personally avoid it. You can gobble up all of the non-browing apples and salmon with eel genes to your heart's content. There is NO reason not to let people know what is in their food.

  • It is my understanding that farm worker human studies have been proving the health risks associated with pesticides for years with higher rates of cancer and other diseases. It probably doesn't show up in this way in humans because we slowly kill ourselves and some people are more susceptible than others, and possibly a pesticide/GMO link could be established if GMOs were labeled and could be traced back. I will never forget when 30 years ago a farmer's wife came into the dress store I was working in and told me about how she had had 11 miscarriages and everyone happened right after they sprayed pesticides on their farm. Pesticides are designed to kill and are a neurotoxin period. What do you think when you eat it the effect goes away?
