Asda offered the highest number of cheapest items this week, including the Canada ginger ale (96p), brie (45p), green beans (96p/kg), Andrex (£1.98), and Oyster Bay sauvignon blanc (£8.62).

At £49.70, Asda's basket was for the second week running the only one to come in under £50.

Offering the cheapest Hovis loaf (£1), beef rump steak (£5.06) and romaine lettuce (50p) helped Sainsbury's climb one place to second. The retailer made no hikes or reductions this week and offered eight items on promotion.

Morrisons also moved up one place and provided the cheapest cheese pizza (£1.54), chocolate profiterole stack (£1.39) and naan bread, which at 50p was 5p cheaper than last week.

Tesco's basket was only 4p more expensive than Morrisons' but it was enough to drop the retailer two places. Tesco offered the most items on promotion and four of the cheapest items Mr Kipling French Fancies (£1), risotto rice (85p), pork pies (£1.50) and Shape yoghurts (75p) but made four hikes, including adding 25p to the Hovis loaf and 55p to the Chicken Tonight even though both items remained on promotion.

Waitrose's basket, in fifth, was £14.64 more expensive than Asda's, and the retailer failed to provide any of the cheapest items.
