Castell Howell Foods distributed 16,000 food packs over the summer holidays as part of a local authority programme to support children at risk of hunger.
The Welsh wholesaler has been distributing food packages during the school holidays since 2015 as part of Cardiff Council’s award-winning Food and Fun initiative.
As part of the scheme, the business delivers a mixture of local ingredients and freshly made meals to vulnerable children, alongside sports education and information about nutrition.
Over the last two years, the boxes have provided around one million holiday and lockdown meals.
Castell Howell also worked in collaboration with its suppliers to create nutritionally-compliant meals, arrange stock, pack boxes and loan out the refrigerated vehicles to the local authority for additional storage.
“There are thousands of children who rely on their school meals for vital nutrition and would have missed out during the summer holidays,” said Castell Howell food director Matt Lewis.
“We’re proud to work with both our local authority customers and our supply chain to help support children’s wellbeing and nutritional education.
“Times have been challenging for many families in our local area, with more challenges to come, and we want to play a role in ensuring that children are given an opportunity to develop, safe in the knowledge that their dietary needs are met.”
