Brakes has partnered with Nutritics to launch ‘Virtual Chef’, a recipe management tool that allows customers to input the calorie and allergen information of Brakes products at the same time.

The new technology would reduce the potential for human error and save businesses time by providing bespoke label design functionality as new government legislation on calorie labelling came in, Brakes said.

The foodservice wholesaler has also created a number of additional resources to support customers who are confused by the new legislation, which comes into force on 6 April.

From then, regulations will require large businesses with over 250 members of staff to display calorie information of non pre-packed food and soft drinks.

However, the rules also allow exemptions and exclusions in specific cases, which is causing confusion for some businesses. Following feedback from its customers, Brakes has decided to provide resources to clarify the impact of the new legislation.

“The feedback we’ve received from customers is that some are unsure about this upcoming legislation and how it applies to them,” said Gerry Thomas, technical director at Brakes.

“We’ve therefore tried to create a range of resources that make it as easy as possible for individual operators to ensure that they are compliant with the new rules.”
